Preface

I bought this lens a few years ago to adapt to mirrorless and it did a fantastic job. Oddly I never did get around to shooting this lens on film. But a look at the samples below shows just how solid of a performer it is. I already did a post on this lens three years ago, but I felt it worthy of a do over in this new format.

Takumar 50mm f/4 Macro

Pentax was the first SLR system I learned on many, many years ago by my father. I still have a couple of Pentax SLRs to this day (ME Super and free to me gifted SF10). I still have a couple of 50mm K Mount lenses (AF and MF) but I am still tempted to purchase this lens again. It is an excellent lens.

As previously stated with these posts there will be no spoilers as I will like all of these lenses.

Asking Price

Depending on the condition and what else is included like cases and such these seem to run for $140 or less.

Value

A fair price for a great lens. A current look at manual focus mirrorless macro lenses shows how much of a value this lens is.

Why I (Had) Bought It

Pentax makes great lenses. Not as heralded as some more expensive options it easily holds its own against all comers in my opinion. Less than $140 for a small macro lens is a great bargain.

Image Quality

Takumar makes an impressive lens. Very sturdy build and a good looking lens. It was my go to macro and product lens for quite a while.

  • Flare
    • Have not witnessed any flare with this lens.
  • Sharpness
    • This is typically a strong suit of macro lenses and this lens is no exception. A very sharp lens.
  • Colors
    • I really like the colors this lens produces.
  • Bokeh
    • Another win. Given it’s modest f/4 aperture this lens really makes the most of its macroconfiguration and produces wonderful bokeh.

Conclusion

A great 50mm macro lens. You could spend more for modern mirrorless MF lens but this would do just as well or even better than most. If you enjoy shooting on film and digital this lens is a great option.
